The Bamboo Project supports the work by the Bamboo Village Trust (BVT) whose vision is to create a restoration economy on degraded land globally.
A key mission is to create 200 bamboo villages across the tropical belt by 2030 for sustainability purposes. To do so, working hand in hand with local partners who are the front liners in the ecosystem is important.
WEL funds the project while BVT imparts technical expertise in bamboo, combined with the local wisdom, technical expertise, and other capabilities from the local partners.
To be eligible, local partners must have at least 2000 Ha degraded land with clean and clear tenure and infrastructure access; a robust structure and authorisation to apply and receive grants, and promote women’s participation.
In January 2024, a team comprising representatives from WEL, SUSS and BVT visited Aceh Tamiang in Indonesia to assess the degraded lands and meet with local partners.
Bamboo farming in Aceh Tamiang thrives in the region's tropical climate. With adaptable varieties and cultivation methods, farmers in Aceh Tamiang engage in the propagation of bamboo through seeds or vegetative means, catering to the local conditions. Well-drained soil and sufficient water supply contribute to healthy bamboo growth which also requires regular maintenance and pest control. Harvesting the bamboo produces highly versatile raw material for construction, furniture, and handicraft.
Beyond economic opportunities, bamboo farming in Aceh Tamiang contributes to environmental conservation, addressing soil erosion, carbon sequestration, and biodiversity enhancement. As a beacon of sustainable agriculture, bamboo farming in this region represents a harmonious blend of economic prosperity and ecological well-being.
SUSS was established in 2017 as an autonomous university in Singapore, providing an applied education in the social sciences and disciplines that have a strong impact on human and community development. SUSS offers over 100 undergraduate and graduate programmes, available in full- and part-time study modes, which are flexible, modular, and inter-disciplinary, catering to both fresh school leavers and adult learners. They also offer a broad range of continuing education and training modular courses for the professional skills upgrading of Singapore’s workforce.
In June 2023, SUSS and We-Empower signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enable partnerships between business families and grassroots family enterprises in ASEAN and China. This strategic collaboration is grounded on a shared vision of enabling good for the society, and to address the growing phenomena of ‘poverty of opportunities’, improving conditions of living and securing a better future.
SUSS will be the applied knowledge partner while We-Empower will lead by assembling philanthropic resources and tapping on the perspectives and experiences contributed by the younger generation of business families. Together, they will co-create the design, development and delivery of programmes and initiatives in social entrepreneurship and innovation.
SUSS faculty and students will have the opportunity to team up with business families to launch studies into existing challenges and create innovative solutions for grassroots communities to implement, exposing students to real-life opportunities to develop and apply entrepreneurial skills as they ideate and innovate on various community projects.
